Filming on Star Wars: Episode VII begins in May and the hype for the return of the franchise to the big screen is growing. Today Disney added a small amount to that hype by confirming that Episode VII will indeed be coming to IMAX theaters.

Walt Disney Studios today announced that it has signed an expanded agreement with IMAX to put most of the studio’s biggest summer movies into IMAX theaters. The deal further extends the long-running agreement the companies have had to put Disney movies on IMAX.

“Disney has enjoyed a terrific ongoing collaboration with IMAX, and we are thrilled to extend this relationship with a collection of exciting, highly anticipated cinematic events that are perfect for the immersive IMAX format,” said Alan Bergman, president of Walt Disney Studios.

As per the agreement, Disney will bet putting what it calls its “tentpole” live-action movies on IMAX. Specifically this includes several big titles coming both this year and in 2015, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Maleficent, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tomorrowland, and, of course, Star Wars: Episode VII.

“Disney’s and Marvel’s larger-than-life characters and dynamic universes clearly resonate with our core audiences,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President of IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “We are delighted to build upon this longtime association and continue to collaborate to bring many of the most iconic and cutting-edge properties in the world to life in the most immersive way possible.”

The news of an extended Disney and IMAX relationship should come as no surprise to movie fans. In particular the next Avengers move and Episode VII are guaranteed to receive a full-press marketing blitz from Disney and appear on nearly every theater throughout the U.S.

Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters in the U.S. on December 18, 2015. Just this week Lucasfilm announced that primary shooting on the movie will begin in May and revealed that the story of Episode VII will take place 30 years after the end of Return of the Jedi.
