Lawrence O’Donnell is taking several weeks off as host of MSNBC’s The Last Word to recover from injuries he sustained in a taxi accident with his brother while on vacation outside of the U.S., the network said Monday.

O’Donnell and his brother, Michael, were both transported back to the United States for treatment. Lawrence went to New York, and Michael was brought to Boston. The network did not provide details regarding their injuries, but said that both men are expected to make a full recovery.

MSNBC did not specify where the brothers were vacationing when the accident occurred.

“Lawrence will be off from MSNBC for several weeks as he recuperates,” MSNBC said in a statement. “Our thoughts and support are with the O’Donnell family and we look forward to having Lawrence back on the air soon,” the statement said.

Ari Melber, co-host of the afternoon talk show The Cycle, is scheduled to fill in for O’Donnell on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell on Wednesday and Thursday, while daytime MSNBC anchor Alex Wagner sat in as host on Monday and Tuesday. The two will take turns filling in for O’Donnell on his show while he is recuperating, the network said in a statement.

O’Donnell served as a congressional aide in Washington D.C., and then brought his political experience to the small screen when he worked as a screenwriter, producer and story editor on the NBC television series The West Wing from 2000-2006.

O’Donnell began working for the network in 2009 as a contributor the Morning Joe program with Chuck Scarborough, and then began hosting The Last Word the following year.

The Last Word airs on MSNBC Mondays through Thursdays at 10 p.m. EST.
