Since 2004 when it ended, fans of the 1990s hit television show Friends have been wishing and hoping for a reunion. On Monday night, the rumors of that possibility were shut down (again) by actress Courteney Cox.

“It’s not going to happen,” Cox told David Letterman on The Late Show.

“Let me tell you something: there’s six friends and I’ve been trying to put together a cast dinner for 10 years. It doesn’t happen. I can get the girls to come, maybe Matthew Perry. Matt LeBlanc canceled last time right at the last minute, Schwimmer lives here [in New York City]…”

Cox’s comment confirms what Marta Kaufman, co-creator of Friends, said last April.

“I’m going to clear this up – it’s not happening,” Kaufman said. “‘Friends’ was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore.”

Friends ran for 10 seasons on NBC, becoming one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. It even is said to have had cultural impact during the run: “The Rachel” hairstyle that was copied all over the world, Joey’s catchphrase “How you doin’?” became a part of American slang, and Chandler’s habit of leaving a sentence unfinished for sarcasm started to affect young society’s speech patterns.

Although the six actors won’t be reuniting at Central Perk any time soon, many have moved on to other television series and/or films. Cox is currently starring on ABC’s hit comedy Cougar Town. Jennifer Aniston has had enduring film success in movies such as Horrible Bosses and We’re the Millers. Lisa Kudrow is starring in her third season of Web Therapy on Showtime. Matt LeBlanc stars as a fictional version of himself on the BBC Two/Showtime series Episodes. Matthew Perry is soon to star as Oscar Madison in a new television version of The Odd Couple and David Schwimmer has been working on and Off-Broadway in a handful of stage debuts.

However, if fans are still in Rachel-Monica-Phoebe-Joey-Chandler-Ross withdrawal, there are always reruns.
