One of America’s most-beloved classic novels is finally hitting the digital world.
Harper Lee has agreed to an e-book version of her well-known (and oft-assigned) Pulitzer Prize-winning book To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel, which was first published in July of 1960, will be released as an e-book and on digital audio this upcoming July, which will mark the work’s 54th anniversary.
HarperCollins made the announcement on Harper Lee’s 88th birthday.
“I’m still old-fashioned. I love dusty old books and libraries,” says Harper Lee. “This is Mockingbird for a new generation.”
“Every home has a dog-eared copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, and now readers will be able to add this favorite book to their digital libraries,” says Michael Morrison, President and Publisher of HarperCollins U.S. General Books Group and Canada. “Although today is Nelle Harper Lee’s birthday, she is giving readers around the world the gift of being able to read or listen to this extraordinary story in all formats.”
There’s nary a kid in America that leaves public school unfamiliar with Lee’s southern gothic novel. To Kill a Mockingbird explores racial, gender, and class roles in America’s deep south during a turbulent time in the country’s history. The novel inspired a classic film of the same name, featuring one of the great portrayals in modern cinema–Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.
The old-fashioned paper version of the book has sold over 30 million copies in English alone, and has been translated into 40+ languages. Both the e-book and digital audio version will drop on July 8th, and the latter will be narrated by Sissy Spacek.
