Dorothy Hodgkin is the subject of a Google doodle today. Hodgkin was a British biochemist, who was actually born in Cairo, Egypt.

Hodgkin won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1964, making her the first British woman to win a Nobel Prize for a science subject. She won for solving the structures of biological molecules using X-ray crystallography, for which she is considered a pioneer.

She was able to confirm the structures of penicillin and vitamin B12. She was the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Here’s a video featuring Dorothy Hodgkin biographer Georgina Ferry discussing her work.

Hodgkin died in 1994.
