According to various reports, Netflix may be getting a new original series called The Crown, which follows Queen Elizabeth II, and is based on Peter Morgan’s play The Audience.
Morgan, who wrote the film The Queen, is behind the production along with Stephen Daldry. Netflix has yet to deliver confirmation that it indeed has the show, but The Guardian reports that it “is understood to have beaten off competition from the BBC and ITV” for it.
The report also puts the show’s cost at £100m.
TechCrunch says the show is to follow Queen Elizabeth II “over the course of various historical events during her reign,” and “an initial concept for the show could have different actresses portraying the Queen at different points in her life.”
Netflix’s David Wells said earlier this week that the company is focusing on adding more highly-rated and exclusive content. This project could very well fit into both of those categories.
Helen Mirren played the queen in the The Queen, as well as in The Audience, but is not expected to do so in the new series.
