Cindy McCain, wife of Sen. John McCain, is joining the group of critics who think Gwyneth Paltrow is out of touch with reality.

During an appearance at the inaugural Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, on Tuesday, Paltrow compared being insulted on the internet to being in war.

“It’s culturally acceptable to be an anonymous commenter. It’s culturally acceptable to say, ‘I’m just going to take all of my internal pain and externalize it anonymously,'” Paltrow said. “It’s taken me a long time to get to the point where I can see these things and not take it as a personal affront and a hurt. I see myself as a chalkboard or a whiteboard or a screen, and someone is just putting up their own projection on it.”

“You come across [online comments] about yourself and about your friends, and it’s a very dehumanizing thing,” Paltrow continued. “It’s almost like how, in war, you go through this bloody, dehumanizing thing, and then something is defined out of it. My hope is, as we get out of it, we’ll reach the next level of conscience.”

Paltrow’s comments did not sit well with McCain, who has two sons serving in the military. Cindy later took to Twitter to call Paltrow and her beliefs a joke. “Gweneth Paltrow is a joke,” McCain wrote. “Her life is like taking bullets for a soldier. What a joke! My 2 sons serving in the military should talk to her.”

McCain then posted another tweet about Paltrow that read: “Perhaps Gweneth Paltrow should go out on patrol with some soldiers. Kind of like a Red Carpet in her mind I guess!”

In a later interview with HLN, McCain also referenced Paltrow’s comments. “I think it was an ignorant thing to say and certainly a selfish thing to say. … It’s Hollywood, I don’t know what else to say.”
