Drew Barrymore has always been known as a sweet flower-child of sorts in Hollywood; even when she gained wild-girl cred when she posed for Playboy and flashed David Letterman while doing a seductive dance on top of his desk, her charming attitude towards life kept her from becoming tabloid fodder. Now that she’s added producing to her considerable list of talents and created her own vineyard, the married mother of two has settled down quite a bit; however, that doesn’t mean people aren’t still interested in those wild days.
Cameron Diaz, who has been close friends with Barrymore for several years, says she was asked by the media recently about whether or not the pair ever hooked up. The question stemmed from an interview with Diaz in which she said she had a “never say never” attitude towards being with a woman.
“Some media outlet called for a comment after Drew gave birth to her second daughter, and they wanted to know whether I was with Drew. Literally, I said, ‘That makes me want to vomit in my mouth.’ That’s like saying I’m having sex with my sister. Are you crazy? I wouldn’t even ménage with her!”
The women actually became friends as teenagers when they lived in L.A., but they really became close while filming Charlie’s Angels and formed an instant bond, which is clear on film. Diaz said that while she might not feel anything but friendship towards Barrymore, she’s never ruled out being with a woman.
“Everybody tries things and sees things and checks them out, and either walks away or walks further in. It’s life – it’s what people do. I’m not going to tell people what I’ve done, but I’m also not going to say, “No! I would never!” If I said that, I’d be shaming myself and shaming other people’s choices. I don’t want to add any stigma to someone’s choice.”
Diaz spoke recently about her new movie Sex Tape, in which she bares it all, and said that with age has come a certain amount of confidence.
“I like being 41. I love it. So much s–t just falls away. Fear, mostly. It’s the best age. That’s when a woman knows how to work things, or she doesn’t care about that anymore. You just stop being afraid. You don’t worry about what men think. You just don’t worry that time registers anything awful,” she said.
