Microsoft is said to be planning to introduce the world to Windows 9 as soon as next month.

According to a report from The Verge, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans, a press event is planned for September 30th, though that’s apparently subject to change. Either way, it sounds like we’ll be getting a look pretty soon.

The report says the company will release a preview version of the operating system, which is codenamed Threshold. Others have already reported that Microsoft would release such a version in the next month or two. From The Verge’s report:

Microsoft is said to be planning an overview of key new features of the upcoming operating system, with a technical preview ready for developers and enthusiasts. Microsoft is also building a separate combined version of Windows RT and Windows Phone, and the company may take the time to detail this work during its press event.

The event will provide a new look at the immediate future of Microsoft’s flagship operating system under its new CEO Satya Nadella. it’s expected to be released to the public next year.

Screenshots of the OS were leaked last month, showing a new mini Start Button and all around Start Button experience among other things. Take a look at PC World.
