Film adaptations of video games have a varying track record of success – both in terms of gross revenue and in terms of quality. But the good thing about most video game movies is that there’s already a built-in audience.

That’s especially true for Tetris, the classic puzzle game which, according to the Wall Street Journal, is coming to a theater near you.

From Larry Kasanoff, the guy who brought you Mortal Kombat, and his company Threshold Entertainment, comes the story of squares, L-shapes, T-shapes, and I-shapes – well, maybe some of the latter. It’s always so hard to find one when you really need one.

Kasanoff is calling it an “epic sci-fi movie” and says that it won’t just be a bunch of talking blocks.

“It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie,” he told the WSJ. “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”

In fact, scouring YouTube will net you plenty of fan-made trailers, like the one above, for possible Tetris-themed films. There’s clearly a market for this.

Anyway, the film is a long way from your local theater. Apparently there is a story already conceived, but no actors or director attached.
