Rapper Ice Cube dished on the N.W.A. biographical film Straight Outta Compton when he made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on October 21, Monday. Ice Cube told host Jimmy Kimmel that the film had just wrapped principal photography and proudly shared that his son was starring in the film.
“My son is in it, he plays me in the movie, so I’m extremely proud of that, that’s cool,” Ice Cube said.
Although O’Shea Jackson, Ice Cube’s 22-year-old son, seems like a no-brainer to play his father, the rapper maintained that he still had to audition for the role. “Hell yeah. He had to win the part. I ain’t givin’ up nothing free. He’s spot-on. He was born to play the part,” said Ice Cube.
Set for an August 15, 2015 release date, Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray of The Italian Job, and produced by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. The film documents the rise and fall of the rap group composed of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella that hailed from Compton California. In the film, Paul Giamatti lends his acting chops by playing manager Jerry Heller.
Ice Cube also praised the largely unknown young actors in the cast for doing “a hell of a job”. Many of the people depicted in the film reportedly visited the set to give their input. “We had everybody that was around at that time, back on the set, giving their two cents. Everybody was either mad they wasn’t in the movie enough, or mad they was in the movie too much,” said Ice Cube.
The rapper also played another round of “Ice Cube Saying Nice Things Angrily” with Jimmy Kimmel, reprising the hilarious segment he did the first time he was on the show. The segment showed viewers how Ice Cube put his aggressive signature on comments about pleasant things such as baby spinach in smoothies and rainbows.
