Bret Michaels has been hospitalized over the last several weeks in a number of different hospitals and has undergone surgery on his kidneys, but his bandmates say the painful ordeal hasn’t kept him from trying to perform.
The 51-year old rocker, who was diagnosed with diabetes when he was young, had health issues earlier this year and was rushed offstage after suffering from low blood sugar and the flu. More recently, he had two stents put in during surgery but insisted on performing, which caused him to harm himself.
“Over the last two weeks Bret was in and out of 6 hospitals throughout the Midwest. Including the incredible Mercy Hospital of Northwest Arkansas. The staff and doctors were unbelievable and took incredible care of Bret. Bret continues to be steadfast in his dedication to bring the music to the people. He truly has to be held down to not perform,” said guitarist Pete Evick. “This time it went real bad. During the show he gave 100 percent, but he hurt himself. Jumping around with two stents was a bad idea. I can’t explain the amount of blood or where it came from, but it was horrifying on his bus after the show.”
While Michaels is dedicated to his fans and doesn’t want to cancel any shows, his Facebook page has been lit up this week as those fans plead with him to take care of himself.
“ALRIGHT BRET FANS… ENOUGH IS ENOUGH… LADIES GET THE HAND CUFFS AND THE ROPE… TIE THIS MAN TO A BED AND GIVE HIM FOOD AND MEDS…. MAKE HIM REST…. GEESH BRET WE DONT WANNA MORN YOUR LOSS……. STOP AND REST,” wrote fan Darlene Stevens.
Michaels suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2009 after a piece of the Tony Awards set struck him in the head; he later had to have an appendectomy, which may be related to his recent kidney issues. Despite the hospital stays, more tour dates have been added to the list on his Facebook page.
“While the last few weeks have been tragic, Bret continues to be an inspiration in his ability to push on. In typical Bret fashion, the fans come first,” Evick said.
