For months the tabloids have been dogging Bruce Jenner about whether or not he was headed toward gender reassignment. Sometimes, it just seems like they are making a lot of noise about nothing but a questionable-looking ponytail and some par-for-the-celeb-course plastic surgery.

But then Bruce Jenner steps out with his fingernails painted bright red. That’s not some screaming signal that the man is ready to go for a sex change, but it does give celeb watchers pause.

Now comes the news that Jenner was spotted at Starbucks with a long ponytail, a French manicure, and a pair of diamond stud earrings. Jenner is also still wearing his wedding ring, while ex Kris Jenner is flitting about with her new beau.

None of the “telltale signs” that paparazzi keep snapping about Bruce is a sure signal, but their cumulative listing gave even Bruce’s mother a moment to stop and wonder. Bruce has been spotted wearing Spanx. He’s gotten a tracheal reduction surgery that is common among transgendered men. There is that ponytail. Now the fingernails are getting the princess treatment.

When Esther Jenner was told about recent tabloid photos showing Bruce wearing red nail polish she said, “I never heard of that, I never heard that, so I don’t know what to think.”

But she does believe that most of the flak Bruce catches is all air.

“I love him, no matter what,” Esther Jenner said. “There’s such raunchy publicity all the time. I don’t know. I’ve brought this up to him on the phone when we’ve talked and he says, ‘Mum, you can’t believe this stuff,” he said, ‘You can’t pay any attention to this stuff,’ and I said, ‘Well I want to tell you one thing Bruce, I don’t care if what they’re putting out is true or false, it’s not going to change my love for you,’ and it’s true that’s exactly how I feel, but I don’t like it.”

Esther sys that Bruce is pretty nonchalant about the press surrounding his look.

“He just shrugs it off, tries not to think about it,” she said. “As long as he can get out there on the golf course every day or so, as long as he can drive race cars.”
