According to reports, Netflix will be getting the distribution rights to a new Pee-wee Herman movie, which is to go into production next year.
We’ve been hearing about the project for a while, but the Netflix angle is new. A couple months ago, Paul Reubens, who plays Pee-wee, told Jimmy Fallon:
“There is going to be one and I was hoping I could make this huge announcement tonight but it’s a week away from being announced. But yeah, Judd Apatow is producing it. This was all leaked three years ago, so a little bit is known…We’ve hired a director; I can’t say yet. But we’re going to start in February.”
The Wrap is now reporting that Netflix is nearing a deal to distribute the movie, and confirms that Judd Apatow is producing, though the director and plot have yet to be revealed. From The Wrap:
While a Netflix spokesperson cautioned that there’s no deal in place yet, an individual close to the project told TheWrap “it moved to Netflix a gazillion months ago.” The Pee Wee Herman movie had previously been set up at Universal, though a studio spokesperson told TheWrap the “Pee-Wee project is no longer with Universal.”
The news comes as Netflix has just added the complete series of Pee-wee’s Playhouse to its streaming offering.
