Hiker Hari Simran Singh Khalsa was found dead on a mountain near Mexico City on Friday, not long after he sent a text to his wife saying he would be later coming home than he originally planned for.
“I accidentally summited another mountain. Looks like I’ll be a little later coming back. Save me some lunch if you can,” he wrote in his message on Tuesday.
Khalsa’s wife, Ad Purkh Kaur, said her husband was an experienced hiker and had gone out by himself while the couple were in the town of Tepoztlan on a yoga retreat. Originally from Brooklyn, Khalsa moved to Virginia with Kaur but the two had plans to move back to his hometown and teach yoga classes. His mother, Gurusurya Kaur Khalsa, said he had no fear when it came to the outdoors.
“He did occasionally get lost, but he was confident and experienced and he wasn’t fearful . . . He loved being in the wilderness and wasn’t intimidated,” she said of her son.
Khalsa took a photo of himself at the top of the mountain and sent it to his wife, which helped search crews locate him. His body was found not far from the spot where he took the picture, and while authorities are investigating the cause of death, his family released a statement saying he is believed to have fallen and sustained a fatal head injury.
