Lindsey Vonn is on the path to breaking a major record this year, and over the weekend she’ll be competing in two more races to try and at least match Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record of 62 career World Cup wins on the slopes. One thing she’s got this time around is the support of both her mother and father, who are attending the events in Italy together for the first time since 2002.
”It’s pretty crazy. Lots of Kildows running around,” Vonn said of her family. Her mom, stepdad, and sister are also in attendance this weekend. Lindsey was reportedly estranged from her father for a while, but the two have mended fences and, according to Yahoo!, he’s happy to be cheering her on to victory this week despite the loftiness of the goal.
”It’s a lot of World Cup races to win. So it’s very special when you think about it over the years how many victories. It would be a milestone. ‘We’ll see. As my old coach Erich Sailer said, ‘Don’t write your victory speeches in the starting gate,'” Alan Kildow said.
Vonn has been recovering from a nasty knee injury that required her to be airlifted off a mountain last year, and said in December that she wanted to focus on her speed rather than try slolom, something she hadn’t done since the racing accident.
“I don’t know if I’ll do slalom again. It’s difficult starting in the back. But we’ll see. I haven’t skied slalom since my injuries, so I don’t know how it feels yet,” she said.
Lindsey Vonn finished in 10th place on Friday in the World Cup downhill, but will have another shot at a win today and in the super-G on Sunday.
