Kelsey Grammer of Frasier fame spoke with Vanity Fair recently about the murder of his sister and the guilt he has experienced for many years after. He has since forgiven both her murderer and himself.

“I know a lot of people who’ve lost their siblings and blame themselves,” he said. “It’s hard to explain. It’s not rational. But it happens anyway.”

It was back in 1975 when Kelsey Grammer’s younger sister, Karen Grammer, was kidnapped and murdered by Freddie Glenn. Glenn was convicted and sentence to life in prison. Last summer, Glenn came up for parole, and Kelsey Grammer addressed the parole board.

He explained to the courtroom that his inability to “protect” his younger sister “very nearly destroyed” him. He also added that while he understood that Freddie Glenn felt remorse for the crimes, he didn’t believe he deserved to be released from prison.

“I believe the gift of life and freedom he took from my sister precludes him from ever being allowed to enjoy that gift for himself,” he told Vanity Fair. “He took her future from her with no regard for her whatsoever. He assumed he had a right to do so. He assumed she was his property, and that the precious gift God gave her was his to take.”

Grammer added that the tragedies he has experienced in his 60 years have given him a much greater appreciation for life.

“That every one of us is going to experience some terrible loss. I just got a big dose. For every story you hear that’s tragic, there’s another that’s equally tragic or more so. I think you come to look at it as part of life,” he said.

Kelsey Grammer is headed to Broadway soon, where he will star in Finding Neverland.

Hopefully the actor continues to heal from the tragedy of losing his sister to violence. Kudos to him for speaking up at the killer’s parole hearing.
