Demetrius Blackwell was arraigned on Sunday in the Queens borough of New York on attempted murder charges for shooting a 25-year-old New York Police Department officer. His charges will likely be upgraded to that of murder, however, as the young officer died of his injuries on Monday.
Officer Brian Moore was shot in the head–allegedly by Demetrius Blackwell–on Saturday night while attempting to stop a the man, who was suspected of carrying a handgun.
Moore and his partner were in plainclothes and in an unmarked police car when they approached Demetrius Blackwell in a Queens neighborhood after they saw him adjusting his waistband, a move that made them suspect he had a handgun, authorities said.
Demetrius Blackwell is being held without bail, and hadn’t entered a plea on the attempted murder charge.

“As a member of the NYPD, Officer Moore put the safety of his fellow New Yorkers before his own, and we will remember his service with gratitude and pride,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “I join with all New Yorkers in mourning his passing and send my deepest condolences to his friends and family.”
Brian Moore comes from a family of police officers, and had been on the job since 2010.
Flags at the NYPD headquarters were flying at half mast in honor of Moore’s passing.
Condolences are no doubt going out to the NYPD from all over the country on the tragic death of Officer Brian Moore.
It is uncertain as to when Demetrius Blackwell’s charges will be upgraded to murder.
