Darth Vader is back in black. Madame Tussaud’s, the world-famous wax museum, has announced that they are exhibiting a collection of tableau scenes from Star Wars at their Berlin location.
It’s almost as good as being frozen in carbonite.
The scenes include some odd environs for wax figures. There is the scene of Anakin Skywalker in the lava pits of Mustafar. But there is also Han Solo in the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca.
There is a recreation of the scene where Luke Skywalker is told by Darth Vader who his real father is. You can also see Princess Leia in her “slave Leia” golden bikini.
Which brings us to one of the more challenging wax figures that Madame Tussaud’s has ever had to build.
“A figure would normally take around four months to make … the bigger figures such as the gargantuan Jabba the Hutt took a little bit longer and we did have to create him in a warehouse,” general manager Ben Sweet said.
It took 80 sculptors, hair artists, colorists, set designers and prop makers over a year to build the 11 scenes from all six currently-released Star Wars films.
But back to that “slave Leia” outfit. It is certainly a fan favorite. And the museum went to great lengths to get it right.
“In the case of Princess Leia, obviously there is this famous bikini. It is one of the most famous costumes in film history. We were given access to the Skywalker ranch where the original is so we had a fittings team go and measure it,” principal sculptor Stephen Mansfield said.
When fans were allowed in for a preview, the geekiest of the Star Wars geeks showed up.
“I’m just over the fourth moon of Endor about it, this is just fantastic,” fan Richard Bennett said. “It’s like being in the movies. It’s like being up close and personal.”
No word on how many neck-bearded fellows had to be restrained from touching “slave Leia.”
