Martin Milner, one of the stars of the TV drama Adam-12, died on Sunday at his home in L.A. He was 83. Milner also starred in Route 66.

Best known for his role as L.A.P.D. Officer Pete Molloy on Adam-12 from 1968 to 1975, Martin Milner inspired many people to become cops over the years.

L.A.P.D. Police Chief Charlie Beck is among them.

“Adam-12 and Martin Milner embodied the spirit of the LAPD to millions of viewers,” Chief Beck said in a statement Monday. “His depiction of a professional and tough yet compassionate cop led thousands of men and women applying to become LAPD officers, including me. Godspeed Martin, you will live forever in our hearts.”

During a 1995 interview with People magazine, Martin Milner said he was mostly retired from acting.

“I was never a celebrity–just a working actor,” he said, adding that his passions were “family and fishing, in that order.”

Martin Milner is survived by his wife Judith Bess Jones. The two tied the knot back in 1957. He is also survived by three children–daughter Molly and sons Stuart and Andrew. He was predeceased by a daughter named Amy, who died of acute myeloid leukemia in 2004.
