Jessica Alba has enjoyed success with her Honest Company, which sells natural products for moms and children. But a recent scandal involving the company’s sunscreen has garnered a second lawsuit, and Alba has released a statement saying the legal action is “baseless”.
The sunscreen–which, like all of the products the company offers, is allegedly non-toxic and made with all natural ingredients–has reportedly left several children with “damaging” sunburns, and a lawsuit filed earlier this year alleges that the company changed the formula, removing a substantial amount of zinc oxide from the sunscreen.
“She got really burned on her arms, shoulders, legs face, pretty much everywhere. I was angry,” said mom Gretta Stabler.
At the time, the Honest Company responded with a statement standing by the product.
“The Honest Company is committed to providing safe and effective products and take all consumer feedback very seriously. Our Sunscreen Lotion was tested, by an independent 3rd party, against the protocols prescribed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products. The results showed that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80 minute water-resistant (FDA’s highest rating), SPF 30 sunscreen lotion in accordance with FDA regulations when used as directed (Shake Well. Apply liberally and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying and at least every 2 hours). We stand behind the safety and efficacy of this product.”
Jessica Alba herself responded to the allegations, saying that the company is willing to stand behind each product and the ingredients that go into them.
“We strongly stand behind our products and the responsibility we have to our consumers. We are steadfast in our commitment to transparency and openness,” Jessica said.
In the latest lawsuit, Jonathan Rubin is asking for $5 million after claiming that many of the products sold by Alba’s company–including diapers, soap, and cleaners–aren’t all natural, as touted by the website. Jessica continues to disagree, saying she uses the products with her own children.
“We strongly stand behind our products and the responsibility we have to our consumers…I know my children, Honor and Haven, are growing up in a safer home because of our products,” Jessica Alba said.
