Judy Carne appeared on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In for a few years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She coined the popular phrase, “Sock it to me.” Carne died a few days ago at the age of 76.

Carne played a zany, oddly-dressed persona on Laugh-In, who was immediately doused with water when she spoke the phrase, “Sock it to me.”

Once married to Burt Reynolds, Judy Carne lived a rather tumultuous life filled with drugs and legal issues.

Born Joyce Audrey Botterill in the UK, Judy Carne got her show business start in British TV shows including Danger Man and The Rag Trade in the early 1960s. Soon after, she headed to the U.S., snagging roles in Fair Exchange, Love on a Rooftop, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

In her 1985 memoir, Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside, Judy Carne explained some of her life’s highs and lows, including an addiction to heroin.

“What I have realized is I don’t have to be a star,” she said during an interview after she broke the second vertebra in her back in a car accident. “I just want to work. Whatever turns up, that’s where I’ll go. I lost sight of myself in the last few years. My whole life has been extremes. It took me near death to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Judy Carne died of pneumonia.
