More than two decades ago, Lorena Bobbitt found herself on the news when she cut off her husband’s penis after allegedly suffering constant domestic abuse.

Appearing on the Steve Harvey Show, Bobbitt talked about the tragic incident that happened in 1993.

Lorena Bobbitt, who was only 18 when she left her native country of Venezuela, met her husband John, whom she married in 1989. She says he was as a charming person at the beginning of their relationship, but eventually changed when he started abusing drugs and alcohol and cheating on her with multiple women.

On the night of June 23, 1993, Lorena said that John had sexually abused her, after which she cut off his penis with a kitchen knife in his sleep. The dismembered organ was then disposed of while she was in a moving car.

“I didn’t know where to go,” she said when asked why she did not leave her husband. Lorena Bobbitt admitted she did not know that there were shelters that accommodate victims of domestic violence. At the time, she felt “isolated” since her family was not with her.

“I felt embarrassed to talk about domestic abuse … I felt ashamed. I felt scared,” she told Harvey.

Lorena Bobbitt was acquitted of malicious wounding in 1994 on the grounds of temporary insanity, while John was acquitted of marital sexual assault. His dismembered penis was reattached and he went on to star in adult films: John Wayne Bobbitt Uncut and Frankenpenis.

She revealed that John repeatedly tried to reach out to her but she always deleted his number. She has since remarried but decided to keep her last name from her first marriage. Lorena Bobbitt is now living with her husband and 10-year-old daughter in Virginia.

Today, Lorena runs Lorena’s Red Wagon, an organization which helps women and children victims of domestic abuse.

Lorena Bobbitt Reveals Life After The Incident

“We understand that my story actually has humor, but also we shine the light on domestic violence as well,” Lorena Bobbitt said. “Something good has come out of my, you know, negative.”
