Sylvester Stallone will not be involved in the developing Fox series Rambo: New Blood despite previous claims by the network.

In its initial release about the new series, Fox said that Stallone would be an executive producer on the show and that he might reprise his role from the 1982 series. Since then, Entertainment Weekly reported that Stallone will not be involved.

“Contrary to reports, Sylvester Stallone has opted not to participate in the planned Rambo television series in any way at all,” a rep also confirmed to Deadline. “I wish the others well with the project,” added Stallone.

One has to wonder if the earlier announcement by Fox was just the means to find the, well, means to bring the proposal to the small screen. Now, the actor’s absence from the project could be the end of the project before it ever really made some traction.

According to Deadline, the plan was for the series to focus on the relationship between Stallone’s iconic character of John Rambo and his son. Needless to say, without Stallone, that plan is an impossibility and to get the ball rolling, a new premise will need to be be conceived.

As Fox ponders its options, Stallone meanwhile has received recent critical acclaim for reprising another one of his famous roles: Rocky Balboa in Creed. It would seem, as EW points out, that Sylvester Stallone is all for revisiting the past, but only for projects that suit him.
