Year-end sales are an excellent way for shoppers to stock up their gift cabinet or closet for those birthdays and last-minute events that hit throughout the year. They’re also a great way to get a leg up on next year’s holidays.

So what’s on sale in these year-end sales?

Look for anything marketed as a “gift.” “Gift sets,” “gift boxes,” and “gift collections” are all heavily discounted–sometimes as much as 80 percent during these year-end sales. Buy a half dozen or so. These are excellent for your co-worker, your Aunt Jane’s birthday, or your son’s piano teacher at the end of the school year.

Christmas-themed items are hugely discounted during year-end sales. Stock up on lights, decorations, Christmas cards, and wrapping paper at a fraction of the cost. Stores like Walmart and Rite Aid want to clear these shelves quickly and will often mark seasonal merchandise down up to 90 percent of its initial retail price.

U.S. News & World Report offers readers a list of items not to buy at year-end sales. This list includes electronics and TVs. They say waiting until January is a much better bet for deals.

If you love to shop, these year-end sales are the one time of year you can do so with abandon. You won’t spend much money, and the things you buy will serve a purpose–and save you money–during the rest of the year.
