Born David Jones, Bowie changed his name following the fame of the late Monkees singer Davy Jones.

Demand for a tour has been relentless in recent years, according to the Hollywood Reporter, but David Bowie has kept a very low profile. He opened the rock musical Lazarus in New York City, revisiting the character he played in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Bowie kept an apartment in New York, but was rarely seen.

David Bowie’s death has the U.K. in shock. British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted his condolences.

“I grew up listening to and watching the pop genius David Bowie. He was a master of re-invention, who kept getting it right. A huge loss.”

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, expressed his sadness over David Bowie’s passing.

David Bowie is survived by his wife, the model and designer Iman, as well as a son and a daughter.

The music world has indeed lost an icon with the passing of David Bowie.
