The Danish Girl garnered Alicia Vikander a nomination for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress category, and on Sunday it earned her a big win at the Critics Choice Awards.

Vikander won in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Gerda Wegener opposite Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl.

In the film, Alicia Vikander as Wegener is the wife of a transgender woman played by Eddie Redmayne. She made sure to reference the real-life couple in her speech.

“I was surprised that I couldn’t find enough about this incredible couple,” she said as she accepted her award. “I was very happy and extremely grateful when I was invited to shed light and bring light to a story which I think all of us thought was very moving, but also very important to tell, about two very pioneering women who went on a big journey together. So thank you.”

Vikander also thanked Redmayne, who has gotten much critical acclaim for his role in The Danish Girl.

“I want to thank Eddie Redmayne who was my partner on this,” she said. “He’s a wonderful actor but also my best support throughout this shoot.”
