Ariel Winter took to social media this week to let her fans know there’s nothing wrong with having scars…or showing them to the world.

When the actress chose to wear a black gown to the SAG Awards over the weekend, she probably never imagined it would cause so much controversy on the Web. Rather than being criticized for showing off cleavage–like Susan Sarandon–the young Modern Family star had a lot of fans asking why she would wear something low cut in the back and on the sides, which showed off the scars she carries from having a breast reduction.

“Guys there is a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I’m not ashamed of them at all,” Winter wrote in Twitter.

Ariel recently chose to undergo the surgery because, she says, the size of her chest was not only uncomfortable physically, it was also hard on her self-esteem.

“Being a 5-foot tall girl and having extremely large breasts is really ostracizing and excruciatingly painful. The Internet bullies are awful. I could post a photo where I feel good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am and that I am disgusting,” Winter said in an interview with Glamour last year.

Winter went from a 32F to a 34D as a result of the surgery, and she says that even though the bullying was part of her decision to make the change, she also did it for herself.

“I mainly did it for myself. Yes, I had many comments, and it bothered me that that was kind of what I was known for. And that was kind of what people were commenting on my photos. That bothered me, but it wasn’t the main reason I did it,” Ariel Winter said.
