As many people had expected, Chris Martin and the rest of his band Coldplay were overshadowed by his more experienced supporting acts, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars during the Super Bowl 50 halftime show on Sunday.

The British band kicked off the highly-anticipated show by performing a medley of hits including “Yellow,” “Adventure of a Lifetime,” and “Viva la Vida” on a Glastonbury-inspired stage, complete with multicolored lights and marching bands dressed in psychedelic costumes.

Despite the band’s valiant effort to create an explosive presentation for a huge audience in a massive stage, the rather shoddy audio and lack of an upbeat tempo that is characteristic of these half time shows failed to make the impact that they had probably wanted to achieve.

The energy on the field grew noticeably when Chris Martin turned over the stage to Bruno Mars, who delivered a cool dance routine to his 2015 hit with Mark Ronson, “Uptown Funk.”

However, the highlight of the show was definitely the commanding performance of Beyoncé, who entered the field dressed in black leather and gold accessories. Accompanied by a slew of dancers and drummers, Queen Bey performed her new song “Formation” to the loud cheers of the crowd.

Coldplay then retook the stage from Beyoncé and Bruno Mars to sing their other hits while images of past Super Bowl performers appeared on the large screen. As the three performers joined forces towards the end of the show, Chris Martin can be seen somewhat struggling to keep up with his companions.

As a result, a barrage of memes have surfaced on social media depicting Chris Martin as the supporting act of Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.

In one meme, the 38-year-old musician can be seen standing behind his two co-performers looking like a giddy fan who is thrilled to be standing next to his idols.

Several celebrities has also commented on Chris Martin’s star struck photo by tweeting their own witty captions. Gossip blogger Perez Hilton said: “We’ve all been #ChrisMartin at some point” and Empire’s Taraji P. Henson mistook Coldplay for Maroon 5.
