John Legend and Chrissy Teigen: Are They Playing God in Selection of Embryo?

John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen are expecting their first child in April. The singer and supermodel have come under great scrutiny in recent days since she spoke out about having chosen a “baby girl” embryo with which to be implanted, following IVF treatments.

In an interview with People magazine, Teigen said she specifically wanted John Legend to have a little girl to raise, prompting some to wonder if the couple is playing God in their attempts to bring a child into the world.

“I’ve made this decision,” she says. “Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’”

“I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me,” she explains. “It excited me to see–just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond. A boy will come along. We’ll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick. But he definitely is very lucky to have a little girl. And this girl is going to be so completely lucky to have John as her papa–it’s crazy!”

Since the interview posted online, both John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have created a bit of a Twitter frenzy, with several media outlets and individuals questioning their decision.

What’s your take? Do you believe Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are essentially playing God in the way they chose the sex of the embryo with which she was implanted? Or is this simply something modern science has made available to women and couples as part of IVF?
