AMD is getting some major help producing its Athena AI chipset, with Microsoft helping fund AMD’s development.

Dedicated chipsets are increasingly important as companies integrate AI in a variety of systems and products. AMD is working to roll out its Athena AI chipset, and Bloomberg, via Thurrott, says Microsoft and AMD are partnering on the chipset.

The two companies want Athena AI to compete with Nvidida’s chipsets, which currently dominate the AI market. Despite helping AMD better compete with Nvidia, Thurrott says Microsoft will continue to source chips from the GPU maker in addition to whatever deal it works out with AMD.

“We are very excited about our opportunity in AI,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said in a call with analysts. “This is our number one strategic priority. We are in the very early stages of the AI computing era, and the rate of adoption and growth is faster than any other technology in recent history.”
