On his radio show Tuesday Ed Schultz, progressive commentator and host of MSNBC’s The Ed Show, attacked conservative radio host Laura Ingraham by calling her a “right wing slut.”
“President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they’re talking about, like this right-wing slut, what’s her name, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she’s a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama’s doing it, they’re working him over.”
Here’s the audio of the remark:
This remark obviously turned heads. Whether you agree with the core of his argument or not, the language used is quite acerbic. Schultz has been in hot water over comments before, after he called Republicans “bastards” earlier this year.
MSNBC suspended Schultz for his remarks for a week without pay:
MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
Ingraham weighed in on Twitter:
MSNBC suspends Schultz. Oh great, now his ratings will go up.
Ingraham also responded late last night via Facebook, also taking the chance to promote her upcoming book:
The crude comments made about me by Ed Schultz on his radio program: First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book “Of Thee I Zing.” Now I’m tempted to insert one additional zing–about men who preach civility but practice misogyny.
Last night on the Ed Show, Schultz apologized to Ingraham, saying his remarks were “vile and inappropriate.”
“I am deeply sorry, and I apologize,” said Schultz. “It was wrong, uncalled for and I recognize the severity of what I said. I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness. ”
Just a couple of hours ago, Ingraham tweeted this:
Ed Schultz: Apology accepted.
Others in the political realm have responded on Twitter. Former MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann has defended Ingraham, even against those who attempt to justify Schultz’s remarks. In response to a tweet that said “It was a qualified ‘talk slut’, not a reference to her personal life,” Olbermann tweeted:
@nowyre Bullshit – would you be ok with Beck saying that about Maddow?
And unsurprisingly, Sarah Palin has something to say about it:
