Social media is becoming the best new way for musicians to connect with their fans, and Katy Perry seems to recognize this. Not only has she released a teaser trailer for her upcoming video “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” via Twitter and Facebook, but in the process she has created at alter ego on the social networks as well.
Here’s a look at the campaign so far:
She tweeted the announcement of the new trailer for her upcoming video, linking to her Facebook profile.
ATTN: Go to my facebook, www.facebook.com/katyperry and u’ll see the TRAILER for my NEW video, LAST FRIDAY NIGHT coming out in ONE WEEK!
Over on Facebook, we get a 30 second teaser for the new video, where she unveils her dorky, head-gear wearing alter-ego Kathy Beth Terry and asks us to “like” her. Here’s the teaser trailer vid:
The profile for Kathy Beth Terry already has over 5,000 likes, and features Perry dressed as the girl from her video. According to the info, Kathy Beth is an 8th grader at Harry S. Truman High School who enjoys the solar system, science fairs, Hanson and Johnathan Taylor Thomas. Helloooooo 90’s. She just posted some pics to the page of “celeb” cuties featuring Jared Leto and Rider Strong (Shaun from Boy Meets World).
Katy Perry also gave a follow request to Kathy Beth Terry on Twitter, saying she is her version of Beyonce’s Sasha Fierce.
Kathy Beth Terry’s first tweet was about 5 hours ago and she already has almost 10,000 followers. Her Twitter profile mirrors her Facebook profile and says she loves Sudoku, Skip-It and of course JTT. Here are a few of her tweets:
Harry S. Truman High: your firewall is weak, just hacked into @Twitter at the library, you can’t block me, n00bs!
Creating a nerdy 90’s alter ego on social media sites in order to promote your new song/video? Giving me a Johnathan Taylor Thomas reference? And a Skip-It reference? I would say that yeah, Katy Perry, you’re doin it right.
