We’ve talked a lot about the competition between Facebook and Google, which in my opinion, boils down to identity in the end. But there are plenty of narrower areas where they’re competing, and video is among them.
Consider how Google is trying to turn YouTube into an alternative to cable and satellite TV essentially. YouTube has been doing a lot of live broadcasts and concerts, and in October, the first global, live concert broadcast on Facebook will happen.
Facebook users will actually have pay to watch it though.
The concert is the Michael Forever tribute event, a tribute to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson.
“Milyoni and Ridgeline Entertainment announce Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert, the first global Pay-Per-View concert available to Facebook fans around the world,” a representative for Milyoni tells WebProNews in an email. “Milyoni’s technology, in conjunction with Facebook, will provide a unique level of social interaction by allowing participants to like, comment, chat and share the live concert experience with fellow friends and fans online, as if they were there together.”
“Fans around the world can watch the star-studded event by using one of two global currencies, Facebook Credits or PayPal,” she says. “Viewers can RSVP to the concert or purchase access to the live broadcast in advance of October 8 for 40 Facebook Credits ($3.99), or on the day of the event for 50 Facebook Credits ($4.99).”
The vent will take place on October 8 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. It will be hosted by Jamie Foxx and feature performances from Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, The Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson and others.
