Anthropic is reportedly preparing for another round of funding, one that would see the AI startup valued at some $60 billion.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic is preparing to raise an additional $2 billion in an upcoming round of funding. Lightspeed Venture Partners is taking the lead on the new round of funding.
Anthropic was valued at $18 billion last year. If everything proceeds with the current round of funding, WSJ reports that the company will be the fifth-most valuable US startup, behind SpaceX, OpenAI, Stripe, and Databricks.
Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI engineers who left the company over concerns that OpenAI was not living up to its original goal of developing safe AI, a theme that has resurfaced and continued to plague OpenAI in recent months. In contrast, Anthropic has been one of the more vocal supports of AI testing and safeguards, among current AI companies.
Claude, Anthropic’s family of AI models, have won praise for going toe-to-toe with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, even beating it in some tests. The new round of funding will help Anthropic continue to innovate and further AI development.
