A family in Las Vegas has two sets of multiples and an extra five people added to their brood after mother Evonne Derrico gave birth to quintuplets last week.
Derrico and her husband, Deon, already had a set of twin boys and two other children when they discovered they would be having quadruplets; later, they found out there was a fifth baby in the womb. The Derricos say the babies were conceived naturally and that twins and multiples run in the family.
Derrico was taken to a hospital in Mesa, Arizona to give birth at 32 weeks along–which is fairly late for a multiple birth–so she could be under a specialist’s care and brought five healthy babies into the world.
“It has been a journey,” Evonne said. “It’s not one that I’d throw lightly out there at anyone. This is not a marathon. I didn’t think at one time I could do it.”
Now, in addition to 7-year-old daughter, Dai, 3-year-old son, Deon, and one-year-old twin boys Dallas and Denver, the family has three girls and two boys:
Deniko, a boy, born at 11:17 a.m.
Dariz, a boy, born at 11:18 a.m.
Deonee, a girl, born at 11:19 a.m.
Daician, a girl, born at 11:20 a.m.
Daiten, a girl, born at 11:21 a.m.
Deon Derrico says the family is still working out accommodations for eleven people–such as a vehicle that will hold everyone safely–but they are all excited to get the babies home.
“There’s just so much to figure out…This has humbled me,” he said. “I feel very honored that God chose us.”
