Jennifer Aniston has long been known as one of the most glamorous women in Hollywood. However, for her most recent film Cake, Aniston had to “fall apart physically” for her character’s part.

Aniston plays the part of Claire Simmons, a woman suffering from chronic pain, in the dark comedy.

To prepare for her role, Aniston spoke with several people with the condition, and had to physically let her body go, which meant not attending her normal yoga and fitness classes.

“There was not a lot of home time,” Aniston told Vanity Fair. “So I was pretty much going home, going to sleep. . . I didn’t do anything physically … I pretty much let myself fall apart physically and that was really important for me.”

Aniston also had to trade in her makeup for prosthetic scars, which she explained was very liberating. “It actually was extremely liberating,” Aniston said.

“As women, we do feel that we have to live up to an expectation whether it is on camera or going to the market or whatever it is,” she continued. “The truth of the matter is that that is not always the way it is. We don’t always have our high heels on. We don’t always have our hair and makeup on. And this character is basically someone who had just given up, just on even waking up sometimes.”
