Facebook is getting more and more serious about news. Today, the company announced the launch of some new journalist resources, including a Page called “Journalists on Facebook” and a new journalist workshop program that it says will span the globe.
A Facebook spokesperson tells WebProNews, “The new Page will serve as a resource for the growing number of reporters using Facebook to find sources, interact with readers, and advance stories. Content will be added regularly, and feedback from the journalism community will be incorporated.”
“As newsrooms become more social, the Page will provide a place for journalists to connect with each other, as well as have access to best practices for integrating the latest Facebook products with their work and connecting with the Facebook audience of more than 500 million people,” she adds.
Facebook also revealed that the average media organization has seen an increase in Facebook referral traffic of greater than 300% since the company launched its initiatives in early 2010, working with media organizations to “make content more social” – presumably the social plugins/open graph.
The workshop is called the Facebook Journalism Meetup program, which will involve the company hosting events around the world to provide workshops on using Facebook as a reporting tool, and spark dialogue among journalists.
Forgive me for throwing in a shameless plug, but as newsmakers do use Facebook (as most people do), you journalists (and bloggers) might find our SocialDitto tool handy for embedding Facebook posts into articles, much like the Twitter Blackbird Pie does for tweets. SocialDitto also does tweets, by the way.
As far as the Journalists on Facebook Page, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Piers Morgan, and Arianna Huffington are among those who “like” it so far.
