Lena Dunham has taken a lot of flack for her time on Girls–much of which is spent in varying states of undress–because her body type is not seen as ideal by the American media. Now, however, she’s being accused of promoting an unhealthy body type to girls across the country.

Joan Rivers told Howard Stern last week that she thinks Dunham should be more polished if she’s going to be a role model for young females.

“You’re sending a message out to people saying, ‘It’s OK, stay fat, get diabetes, everybody die. Lose your fingers.’ If you look that way you look, Lena, and that’s fine and you’re funny, don’t say it’s OK that other girls can look like this. Try to look better,” Rivers said.

Rivers also called Dunham a hypocrite for appearing on the cover of Vogue in all its photoshopped glory.

Dunham hasn’t commented on Rivers’ opinions, but she has made it clear in the past that she isn’t concerned about having a “perfect” body and wants to show girls a different body type on television. However, she may not even be on the screen much longer; Dunham recently said she’s more interested in being behind the camera than in front of it.

“I don’t know if I’m going to want to act anymore. I’m always relieved on the days I don’t have to. I’d rather give parts to other women than be the woman having the parts,” she said.
