Thursday night, R&B artist and 9-time Grammy winner Mary J Blige’s father, Thomas Blige, was in critical condition after being stabbed by his ex-girlfriend, Cheryl Ann-White. Blige confronted his ex-girlfriend after he encountered her slashing his tires. White then proceeded to stab him multiple times, including once in the neck. Blige was allegedly studying for a college course before he went outside to check on a noise. After the incident, White went to a friend’s house covered in blood-where the police arrested her. Blige was found by his friend and roommate, Michael Thomas, bleeding on the men’s kitchen floor.
White and Blige dated for almost five years, and they live separately at the same apartment complex where the stabbing occurred in Battle Creek, Michigan.
The exes have a history of domestic violence. The Battle Creek police report that they’ve visited Blige and White seven times before and at least one visit resulted in an arrest.
During her sentencing on Friday, White claimed that she acted in self-defense and Blige attacked her first. This isn’t White’s first arrest; she has four previous felony convictions and ten other misdemeanors. She was also arrested in October of 2013 for domestic abuse against Blige. White went on probation after that incident. She’s currently now being held on a $500,000 bond. White’s lawyer plans to advise his client to plead not guilty in the charge of assault with the intent to murder.
One of Mary J.’s biographies states that she and her father don’t have a close relationship because he abandoned her family and abused her mother.
“He left us when I was 4, but he’d come back from time to time and abuse her some more,” Mary J once recalled during an interview.
Mary J has yet to make a public statement on the incident.
