A wide assortment of motion pictures produced and/or distributed by MGM were made available on Monday to individuals who frequent such Google-owned websites as YouTube and Google Play. The troubled studio was an early adopter of the streaming format, unleashing several obscure, hard-to-find titles from its back catalog on Netflix some time ago. The company also inked a deal to bring their extensive collection of films to residents of the U.K. and Ireland, giving the streaming service exclusive rights to the content in that region.

“If there’s one consistent opening image movie-goers around the world know and equate with great cinema, it’s Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s roaring lion,” said YouTube content partnerships manager Jonathan Zepp. “You can now discover, share and watch MGM’s classic films on YouTube and Google Play.”‘

According to IHS Screen Digest, online movie streaming will surpass packaged media for the first time this year. “We are looking at the beginning of the end of the age of movies on physical media like DVD and Blu-ray,” said IHS senior principle analyst Dan Cryan. “But the transition is likely to take time: almost nine years after the launch of the iTunes Store, CDs are still a vital part of the music business.”

Helping to make that prediction a stone cold reality are the over 600 titles MGM is offering movie-goers, a list that includes such titles as James Cameron’s “The Terminator” and Barry Levinson’s acclaimed drama “Rain Man”. Fear not, packaged media fans: You’ll have an extensive collection of decorative beer coasters once digital has won the war.
