That was quick. While most of the Internet luxuriates in Apple’s revealing segment at the WWDC, at least one enterprising Apple user decided he didn’t want to wait for all the fun iOS 5 offers iP__ users. And so, he messed around until he found a way to install it.

In other words, Mert Erdir already hacked Apple’s unreleased iDevice operating system. Erdir is a Turkish fellow how clearly knows his way around an iPhone, and he kept a running “diary” of his progress while he worked. An example:

I wonder if Apple would go after Erdir, ala Sony/George Hotz, if Erdir were an American citizen…

As for the video Erdir mentioned, it was posted over at Gizmodo and it details the hack; although, the exploit has apparently been addressed by Apple’s developer crew. Nevertheless, the technique seems simple enough, even for someone who doesn’t regularly jailbreak/hack, especially mobile devices. The following video was initially featured on Gizmodo’s post, but, inevitably, it found its way to YouTube:

Their post also transcribed the steps involved, and even in text form, the idea is pretty straightforward. The caveat from the hack/installation of iOS 5 comes in the form of a warning posted before the text instructions:

Warning: While this operation should be simple, we are not responsible for what you do to your iPhone. Once completed, you will not be able to connect to a carrier. Proceed at your own risk.

I’m not sure what good a phone without being able to establish a carrier connection is, but at least you’ll have the newest version of iOS a little earlier, right?
