A woman in Colorado was impaled by a guard rail after texting while she was driving away from her daughter’s school.

Christina Jahnz from Elizabeth, Colorado, had reportedly gone to her daughter’s school on Wednesday to drop off her saxophone. As she drove out of Elizabeth Middle School, she decided to text her friend. “I was running late for a business meeting, so I did a voice text. I looked down to make sure it was all right. The next thing I knew, I was looking up, there was white powder from the air bags deployed,” she told 9News.

Jahnz had only been driving at 20 miles per hour, but her collision had caused the guard rail to go through her truck’s headlight, through her but and thigh. The metal pole reportedly even pierced the seat behind her. Elizabeth firefighters rushed to the scene of the accident and were only able to take her out after they sawed off the front and back ends of the pole, Jahnz said.

Jahnza was then rushed to Parker Adventist Hospital, where surgeons immediately worked on her to remove the metal pole from her body. “I went into surgery and I lost count of the stitches after 40. They stitched me up inside, too. I’m truly a miracle. They said if it [had] gone just a little bit the other way I would have bled out,” said Jahnz.

There was apparently no permanent damage made to her body, and Jahnz was able to leave the hospital four days after the incident using a temporary walker. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Jahnz admitted that her rescue and recovery was ‘a miracle.’ She added, “It’s devastating knowing that I could have prevented it to begin with. I just hope my story helps to save the lives of others. Don’t text and drive.”
